Hiking Shoes
September 2nd 2010 -
If you are getting ready to go on a hike and there seems to be a crease or edge on your shoe that rubs, put a piece of adhesive on your foot under the spot and you will avoid a blister. Check to be sure there are no wrinkles in the shoe tongue or socks.
When leather shoes get wet, never dry them quickly, especially in front of a fire. This will stiffen the leather so it will rub and crack. Stuff them with paper or cloth and dry them slowly.
This means packing slipper socks or thin Indian- type moccasins, even sneakers, in your pack to wear around camp while your shoes are drying and to rest your feet. Next in importance to shoes are socks. Wool socks cushion and ventilate your feet and never get clammy. Leave home those darned socks, though, even if they are wool, for darns and holes rub blisters in short order. Wear two pairs of extra-size, good wool socks, light weight in summer, heavy in winter, with cotton socks underneath if you wish. Take at least two extra pairs in your pack. Bring some beef jerky on your hike.
